First of all I just want to say I'm a college student who will be using the Dell XPS 14 L421x for everything from watching movies and web browsing to developing software, rendering sound with a DAW, digital art in Photoshop and play games. Now... THE GOOD: - Appearance: Rugged aluminum housing and rubber finish; makes it durable and fairly easy to clean (and looks like new when you do). -Graphics: Decent gaming performance made possible by NVIDIA graphics adapter. Don't expect 60fps on graphics-heavy games; In my experience Portal 2 runs smoothly on medium settings (with anti-aliasing disabled), other games like Skyrim and AC3 will run at 30-40fps on low-med settings. The NVIDIA control panel is your friend on this point.-Software: no bloatware pre-installed. It made me really happy. -Performance: Decent program load/startup time. Gotta love its SS-HD hybrid drive and Intel's i5. -Portability: not that heavy/thick considering what it's capable of. I don't mind taking it everywhere with me. Also, it can last around 6 hours while browsing the web and probably up to 10 if the screen is off (if, for example, you want to leave it downloading stuff). bright. Watch your stuff on a TV/monitor with HDMI and MiniDP output ports.-USB: amazing 3.0.-Bluetooth: you can't go wrong. flat surface (they are below). Microphone/headphone combo port. -Keyboard: IT'S BACKLIT! -Fan: For most users, this laptop will be SUPER quiet. Now, if you're a gamer... (check out THE BAD) THE BAD:-Screen: It's a complete fingerprint magnet, and it takes more than a simple swipe of a microfiber cloth to remove them. -Case: you CAN't open the computer; if you need to replace a component (even the battery), you must send it to Dell. but like the touchpad issue, it's not a big deal and you'll get used to it. CDs.-Network: Wi-Fi reception isn't exactly the best (probably due to the metal casing), just make sure you find a good spot with as few obstacles as possible between the router and your computer, or use an Ethernet cable. -Temp: Gets a little warmer than I'd be okay with high performance. -Fan: A little noisy when running power-hungry video games. I don't think you can upgrade it either. THE UGLY - Only 2 USB ports. I can manage with 2, but with so much space available on the sides, it's kind of strange that Dell hasn't decided to put at least one extra port in there. not optimal; and as mentioned above, it seems that this model lacks a few GB of RAM and a few extra USB ports. And yes, it is a bit pricey; however, I don't regret buying this laptop at all; so far it hasn't let me down and the pros outweigh the cons. This baby has both beauty and intelligence.
