Dell laptop says 'plugged in and not charging'
SOLVED, AND SO CHEAP AND EASY. I won't say I'm an expert, but I worked in the computer industry for IBM and others from the mid-60s to the mid-90s on everything from mainframes to the birth of PCs and the internet . (Yes, I'm 70). I still work on and with PCs for family and friends, and through help forums. All my years of experience have taught me one thing – that often the solution to a “complex” problem is so simple that it is completely ignored. I found many threads and many possible solutions for this "plugged in and not charging" issue on Dell Inspiron laptop models, and tried most of them to no avail. I have 2 Dell Inspiron 3147 computers and have had many issues with them. I was able to swap batteries and chargers between the 2, but that didn't fix the one that said "plugged in and not charging", so it really didn't make sense to try that easier solution, because one of my PCs worked fine with either charger and the other didn't work with either charger. I finally decided to try the simplest and most absurd solution I've come across. I can't find a thread anymore so I can't give credit to whoever posted it, but that's how it was; "I looked at the plug on my AC adapter that goes into the computer and noticed that the small pin inside was not centered, so I used a small tool to straighten the pin out so that centered and plugged in. HE'S IN CHARGE NOW!"

Realizing that the fit of the AC adapter plug and socket in these Dell laptops has always been loose and sloppy, I looked at my socket and saw that the pin was just a tiny bit off center. I then modified it until it was EXACTLY CENTERED and then plugged it in. NOW IT LOADS. What CRAPPY products Dell manufactures. It would be a waste of time and money to replace the adapter plug on the PC unless you can replace it with a better quality plug that makes absolute positive contact with the center pin of the adapter plug. So while it's fixed for now, I'm sure it will probably fail again the next time I unplug and move the laptop.
