The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is one of the best business laptops on the market. Even though it may look like its previous iterations, it has a lot of new features under the hood. There's really nothing to complain about with the overall aesthetics and durability of this laptop, so upgrades to chips, screen, battery, and other components are absolutely welcome.
Design and construction
If there's a sleekest business or ultrabook award, the X1 Carbon will win it every year. It's not flashy, but it looks incredibly sleek and professional, blending modern design with practicality. As the name suggests, the laptop comes with carbon fiber just about anywhere they can fit it. It has a weave on the lid that suggests the interior of the laptop is the same.
Even though it feels solid and sturdy, it's still incredibly light for a 14-inch machine. It may even weigh less than some 13-inch laptops. To achieve this, it uses a magnesium alloy for its carbon fiber reinforced body making it remarkably robust. There's no noticeable flex on the keyboard when you apply pressure to it, and the hinges don't creak after prolonged use.
As a high-end business laptop, there is also a need for security. The X1 Carbon ensures this by using a separate chip, the dTPM 2.0, to encrypt your data before transmitting it. Plus, other security features help protect you and your data, like the built-in ThinkShutter, which is basically a webcam cover. It also comes with a fingerprint sensor for protected logins to your machine.
You can also find an infrared camera for Windows Hello and the ThinkPad PrivacyGuard, which limits viewing angles so no one can peek at your screen and get crucial information. An innovative feature of PrivacyGuard is that you can configure it automatically. It only activates when it detects that someone is looking at your screen.

The X1 Carbon comes with a few configurations. However, the one we are reviewing is the 4K UHD IPS display which is capable of displaying more vivid colors than its 1080p FHD counterparts. The screen has better color accuracy, making it a great laptop for all types of work, including creative.
The bright display is impressive because you can still use it even in direct lighting conditions. It's also sharper, letting you see more detail, which is definitely helpful if you like watching 4K movies on your laptop.
Ports
When it comes to ultrabooks, port real estate is one of the most important aspects to consider. There will be some omissions as you simply couldn't cram so many ports into a thin and light body. In the X1 Carbon's case, that's the SD card slot, but you have plenty of other ports.
On the left side of the device, you can find two Thunderbolt 3s for insane data transfer speeds. and in charge. It certainly helps to connect your laptop to an external 4K display. It also comes with a USB 3.1 port for connecting other devices and an HDMI port. You will also find a headphone jack and an extension to hardwire your laptop to your network via an Ethernet cable.
The right side doesn't have many ports since that's where the exhaust is, but you still able to find another USB 3.1 port for your mouse and a lock slot so you can leave it on your office in the office and always feel safe.
Input Interface
If there's one component users love about the ThinkPad lineup, it's the keyboard. In the case of the X1 Carbon, its keyboard is incredibly tactile and snappy, letting you feel every keystroke, making typing on this machine a pleasure. Being a business laptop, it also comes with hotkeys for conference calls allowing you to answer or reject calls quickly.
The touchpad can get a little cramped, it's not particularly wide, but the laptop's body isn't. big after all. It has a glass surface that feels great to use and glide around your finger, and pair that with the Windows Precision drivers, you can be sure your commands will follow with precision.
As with all ThinkPad laptops, you also get the iconic TrackPoint, a rubber dome located in the center of your keyboard, giving you the ability to make some quick cursor adjustments. If the X1 Carbon is going to be your first ThinkPad device, it might seem odd at first, but it might come in handy once you get used to it.
Battery life
This X1 Carbon configuration comes with a 4K IPS panel and a bright panel and emitting as many pixels as this can greatly affect battery life. For comparison, the 1080p FHD version can last up to 10 hours on a single charge. The 4K UHD panel, on the other hand, is capable of lasting around 8 hours. It's a little less but still amazingly good, letting you use it all day long without charging.
Performance
Powered by a
Intel Core i7-10510U
, this configuration of the X1 Carbon is quick and fast, capable of maximizing your workflow. With four cores and eight threads, you can do just about anything on this laptop, especially if you open a lot of Google Chrome tabs. Streaming music and videos shouldn't be a problem, and coupled with 16GB of RAM, this machine can handle plenty of multitasking. You can even do some light graphics and video editing work and should be decent when it comes to rendering tasks.
The only place where the X1 Carbon suffers is in terms of graphics. It doesn't come with a discrete chip, so it relies on Intel's built-in UHD 620, which is fine, but not outstanding. Gaming is definitely out of the question, especially if you're looking to play graphics-intensive games.
Day-to-day productivity shouldn't be a problem for this configuration of the X1 Carbon. The i7-10510U is certainly good enough, and it also helps extend your battery life due to its ultra-low power consumption nature.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is an impressive business laptop. It has a sleek, sleek look with the performance to match. If you're looking for a business laptop, this is a great choice. Its slim and durable chassis, impressive 4K display, crisp, tactile keyboard, and smooth performance are just some of the reasons it should be at the top of your list.
