Samsung SmartCam HD Pro, SNH-P6410BNI has been working for a few days now and this is my first security camera purchase. Here are my impressions so far...CAMERA & ACCESSORIES The camera itself is uniquely shaped, not bulky or heavy. It would have been nice to offer more color choices like gray or black (which I would have preferred). The stand is low and can move up and down to adjust the angle of the viewing area. The base is slightly smaller than the camera, has thin pads underneath to avoid scratching the surface. It seems stable enough to avoid being knocked over easily, but I'm afraid the base isn't wider or heavier and doesn't have thicker rubber padding underneath to give it a better grip. As for the accessories, I can only comment on what I used. Ethernet cable worked as it should, only used once during setup before switching to wireless (choice of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). The AC adapter cord is about 8 feet long and barely reaches my outlet, be prepared to use an extension cord if needed. Other included accessories are mounting hardware and multi-language quick start guides, but I didn't use them. I found the setup video more helpful instead (see link below). listed (see link below). So I will comment on the features I have used so far (indoor use only). I first set it up on the windowsill next to the front door to see visitors approaching the driveway and walking path. The quality of the day was very good, whether watching it live or watching recorded video. Although I should mention that it showed strong glare when the sun shone on the window on that side of the house. Otherwise, it was a clear video with only minor reflection issues when viewing through a window. Then I moved it to record inside the house. I watched my son play and walked around the viewing/recording area normally to test it out. Camera quality was best in a well-lit indoor environment, especially with WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) enabled. I only tested the speaker/mic functions during setup, it has volume control for both and like live video there is about a second delay. The motion sensor (even at the lowest sensitivity level) still picked us up from 10-15 feet away, showing good range. To explain how sensitive the motion sensor is, I viewed nighttime recordings of a fly buzzing around the family room. Sure, the video is black/white, but you know the sensor is very good at detecting motion if it captures a bug on video at night. I was impressed, although I could see these false alerts annoying some people if it happens too often. But it was only the first night after installation and I turned the sensitivity down to its lowest setting and left it there. The second night the motion detector registered no flying insects and had no other false alarms. Maybe this was calibrating the sensitivity since I kept adjusting the settings the first day. Samsung's SmartCam website for viewing live streams or recorded content seems friendlier than most I've seen when searching YouTube. Regardless of computer skill level, I think it should be easy to navigate for most users right away. On the SmartCam website, there are three display choices: Low Speed Network (640x360) [NOTE: The product description says 640x480], Medium Speed Network (1280x720), and High Speed Network (1920x1080). You can configure multiple cameras, rename them and assign each a password as well. I also downloaded the SmartCam app from the Google play store and use it more than viewing from a PC. You can manually record live streams and even take photos from your smartphone, with all data saved to the installed micro SD card. Speaking of micro SD cards, I had a problem with a high capacity SanDisk 64GB Ultra Class 10, I kept getting "error" messages even though it can be read on my PC and phone Android. So I'm temporarily using an old SanDisk 4GB class 4 micro SD card which the security camera immediately recognized and you can even format the card from your phone. Additionally, there is a feature to send motion sensor images to your Gmail account where they can be saved to Picasa by Google. So far it seems that I am simultaneously receiving notification images via Gmail and recorded videos via micro SD card. While recording, I found the motion sensor playback feature very useful. On the phone APP, it displays a calendar, choose a day, then a graph of recording times, can quickly display one video after another by pressing "OK" instead of back to the menu to play the next video. On the website using a PC, select the calendar day, then "Motion sensor" from the menu and it displays a time bar graph where you can scroll through the recorded videos. In the settings you can increase the sensitivity of the motion detector as well as configure "Continuous recording". I first tried the 24 hour constant recording, but that used a lot of memory, so I unchecked the box to only record small 30-45 second clips when it detects motion in the area. There is also a feature that lets you save over old footage if the memory card is full. I use it and recommend enabling this feature so motion detection recordings don't get interrupted. CONCLUSION Overall I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. I like the wide area it captures, the resolution up to 1080p, includes speaker/mic with very good night vision and motion detection. Also, the ability to receive image notifications via Gmail/Picasa+ using a Micro SD card for recorded video is very cost effective compared to paying for a monthly/yearly cloud service. But the base and stand seem somewhat unbalanced as the camera is top heavy, could have put more grip padding underneath. The camera doesn't move like the others I've considered, and the motion sensor had a few false alarms (first night only). Finally, doesn't offer more color choices and had micro SD card errors (can't read SanDisk 64GB Ultra, but read SanDisk 4GB Class 4). For these reasons, I cannot give this product a full 5 star rating. Yet despite all that, I would still recommend buying it as a security camera or baby/child monitor. I would even consider buying one more so I could set one up near the window to see the driveway/front door while letting the other camera record the front door/doorway area. the family room inside the house. I hope potential buyers will consider everything I've mentioned before making a decision. Thanks for reading my review. Other Makes/Models Considered: Dropcam Pro ($199 retail) and Foscam FI9821W V2 (retail $159.99). ". ".***** UPDATE #1 (4/14/2014) - Now that I've had it for over two weeks, I thought I'd give a status update. 1) The SD card error continues on SanDisk 64GB Ultra even after reformatting it several times I pretty much gave up on this and am disappointed as the security camera advertises that it can handle up to 64GB. I said in my review, my PC and Android phone could read the memory capacity of this micro SD card, but the security camera just doesn't read it, maybe it only prefers cards Samsung branded high capacity micro SD card, but I'm not willing to shell out the $$$$ to test this theory, so I took the 32GB micro SD card (SanDisk, Class 4) from my Android smartphone, I I formatted it and it now works in the security camera!I wonder if the HD Pro can't read class 10 or some 64gb micro SD cards. But at least I was able to use it. ize Samsung's 32GB camera and upgrade my smartphone's memory card to 64GB Ultra (which it could read, of course). 2) Speaker and microphone functions work quite well. I used it on my Android phone and there is audio delay. When tested in the house, the audio delay is only about 1 second, maybe less. But when I'm at work (42 km from my home), the audio delay is about 5 seconds. You can even hear your response, sounding a bit hollow and robotic, which I found quite funny. Although there is some static in the voice, at least it's clear enough for others to hear and understand what you're saying. To access this feature on Android app, choose camera, touch screen to show menu at bottom, select chat icon (box with quotes), it will turn blue and you will see a symbol of microphone on the right side, press to speak. 3) I have had no more false alarms from the motion sensor. I kept the sensitivity on the lowest setting and it still detects movement when I open the front door from almost 15 feet. In my case, it is not necessary to mount it higher. Also, I turned off "audio detection" because I have a clock that goes off every half hour and can cause lots of false alarms throughout the day. Speaking of false alarms, I don't recommend using the email feature for motion detection alerts. Correction, I only recommend using it if you know no one is home, then turn it on. Otherwise, you will be flooded with false alerts when there are people near the camera. I received over 100 emails in just about 3-4 hours and I couldn't turn it off from my Android phone, I could only turn it off through the desktop PC version. If I think of anything else, I'll update it again. Thank you.***** UPDATE #2 (04/17/2014) - Regarding "Update #1 / Article #1". Soltech Security contacted me about "errors" on the 64GB micro SD card I had. They are an authorized seller and are working closely with Samsung on this new product. I will be returning the SmartCam HD Pro with the SanDisk 64GB micro SD card that was giving me the 'error' message and will be getting a new replacement camera/memory card in exchange. Apparently they pay attention to reviews here on Amazon and try to fix any issues that arise. For me, I find it very reassuring that Samsung does not just put a product on the market and does not care about the problems that consumers encounter. Also, I have noticed that Soltech Security does a great job answering questions from potential customers. It's customer service like this that makes me feel better about purchasing this product and I would definitely consider purchasing a second security camera from Soltech Security.***** UPDATE #3 ( 5/11/2014) - Steps to get a micro SD card problem working. As I mentioned in "Update #2" I received a new HD Pro and 64GB memory card (branded Samsung) and returned the original security camera I purchased with the SanDisk 64GB. The replacement also duplicated the same issue; However, there is a workaround to make the memory card readable regardless of its capacity. When adding or changing memory card: 1) Unplug the power cord from the camera.2) Log out of the SmartCam website.3) Add/change micro SD cards.4) Plug in the power cord. camera power.5) Log in to SmartCam website.6) Go to Set High > SD Card > Power On. It should read the new micro SD card. I experimented with different brands and different memory capacities: SanDisk 4GB, SanDisk 8GB, SanDisk 32GB, and Samsung 64GB. The HD Pro read every memory card when I followed these steps. And BTW, SanDisk 64GB has more "usable" memory space than Samsung 64GB. SanDisk = 62.5GB vs. Samsung = 58.53GB. I reported this to Soltech Security rep and he noticed it also.*****UPDATE #4 (10/28/2017) - Motion sensor recordings error message. I get this error message when trying to view the motion sensor recordings last several days: "Failed to read due to concurrent access or unstable network. Check network status of camera and PC." Tried three different MicroSD cards: SanDisk 32GB & 64GB and Samsung 64GB. All motion recordings but none able to playback whether wired or wireless connection to security camera. Live camera works fine (except no sound). After 3.5 years, it may be time to replace it with another brand/model of indoor security camera. ***** UPDATE #5 (12/9/2017) - I purchased more SmartCam Benefits HD. After extensive research, I decided to buy it again, and more than a security camera this time since Soltech Security was selling "refurbished" models at $79.00 each. Why did I buy the SmartCam HD Pro again? Good question. Over the past two weeks I have received quotes from professional installers selling high quality security camera kits with a local hard drive to store the videos. Their quotes ranged from $1800 to $2800. Bwahaha! No thanks. I even asked them if I bought my own security camera kit (less than $500 at Amazon or Costco) and just hired them to install the equipment, you know to save $$. Those I spoke to informed me that they would do the job but would not guarantee anything as it is not their product they are selling and cannot guarantee the quality (so if something goes wrong, I have to take them all myself to return/exchange). Understandable, but hiring them and spending $1800/$2800 vs. $79 Samsung SmartCam + $15 (32GB SD card) for each camera was a no-brainer for me. My Samsung account is already configured and I know the PC and smartphone interface. Moreover, it is easy to add new cameras to it. I bought two recently and I'm quite happy that I bought two more for a total of four: two facing the house, two more facing the window towards the driveway and yard (I will just taking care of the glare and reflection issues). Finished!
