With so many similar queries posted about sound not working on laptops, I realized the issue is quite common. No matter you have a Lenovo, Acer, Dell or Mac, you might encounter the no sound laptop issue. However, there can be different reasons for the laptop to be tripping without sound issue. In this guide, I will list all the possible solutions to sound problems on laptops of all kinds.

Before we start this troubleshooting guide, let's take a quick look at some of the common reasons I've encountered for my laptop not having sound.

These are some minor errors that usually occur when there is something wrong with the media file. Your media file might be corrupted, have sync issues, or you might be trying to play it with an unsupported player. Like

Hardware issue

Chances are there is something wrong with your laptop's internal speakers or connected speakers as well. The earphones, the connection cable or any other hardware component of your system could be damaged.

Firmware issues

These are the most common reasons why no volume is caused on the laptop. You might have changed the sound setting on your laptop or maybe the essential sound controller is not working. Firmware may also be corrupted or there may be a conflict in running processes (a hang) causing no sound on your laptop. The audio drivers installed on your laptop may also be outdated or corrupted.

First, check that the media file you are trying to play is not corrupted and its format should be supported by the media player. Also, on some laptops there are different jacks for microphones and audio output (speakers). Make sure you have connected the headphones to the output jack and not the microphone one.

To check this, you can disconnect your external speakers from your system and try connecting them to any other device. I thought another reason for no sound on my laptop was changing the default speaker settings. If you have any other speaker enabled by default, you will not get sound from your laptop. If not, you can just make the necessary change from here and check if there is still no sound coming from the laptop or not.

Solution 1: Restart your laptop

The easiest solution to fix the laptop with no sound issue is to perform a standard restart on your computer. All you have to do is click on the start menu and choose to restart your system. This will reset its current power cycle and automatically fix some minor issues. Once your system has successfully rebooted, consider playing a sound on it again.

Before taking drastic measures to fix the volume on the laptop, make sure to check its volume mixer. You can get the option from its taskbar or from its settings. From there, just make sure the speaker output is not muted and the volume level is audible.

When I diagnosed the no sound on my laptop, I realized that the start function of the audio component was manual. In some cases, the peripherals have been seen to disturb the usual functioning of Mac. Therefore, you can first remove all wireless devices and speakers from your Mac. Then you can go to its Finder to restart your Mac and check if it fixes the laptop sound issues.

Solution 2: Check the sound settings on your Mac

It might change the sound settings of your Mac, causing the no volume issue on the laptop. To fix this, go to Sound Finder > System Preferences > Sounds. Now make sure there are no unwanted sound effects implemented. You can also go to the "Output" tab to select your Mac's default internal speakers. From there, also make sure the speakers aren't muted and the volume is high enough.

Solution 3: Restart the sound controller

Sound controller is the central system component of Mac which is responsible for its audio services. If it was not started correctly, you cannot have sound on your laptop. To fix this, just go to its Finder > Applications > Utility and launch the Activity Monitor app. Now find the "CoreAudio" component and close it from here. After that try to play any audio file to restart its sound controller.

Solution 4: Update your Mac

If your Mac hasn't been updated for a while and you're trying to run the latest media player on it, it may cause conflicts. If the PRAM has been corrupted, you may experience the no sound issue on the laptop. To fix this, restart or turn on your Mac and press Command + Option + P + R keys together. You will need to hold these keys for a while until you hear the second chime on your Mac. This would indicate that its PRAM has been reset successfully.
